Thailand: Rescuers amputate a woman's leg after she became trapped in a travelator.

Rescuers had to amputate the leg of a woman who became trapped in a travelator at Bangkok's Don Mueang airport.

Her son stated that the family was "shocked" and concerned about her mental health following the surgery on Thursday evening. According to local media, the 57-year-leg old's became stuck on Thursday morning after she tripped over her suitcase on her way to board a flight.

"My mother's morale is very low," her son wrote on Facebook. "We were able to speak with her briefly before and after the operation... Even though she exuded strength through her facial expressions and tone of voice, we knew deep down that she was broken because she had lost a leg unexpectedly "Kit Kittirattana has been added.

"Our family understands very well that we cannot make her leg work like it used to, nor can we restore the same life she had lived," he wrote.

Pictures on the internet showed the woman, who has not been identified, sitting with her left leg wedged beneath the travelator.

A pink suitcase next to her had two wheels broken off, and yellow comb plates, which are typically found at the ends of travelators, had also broken off.

Airport management expressed "deep sadness" over the incident and stated that they would compensate the woman for the partial loss of her left leg as well as cover her medical expenses.

And airport director Karant Thanakuljeerapat told reporters on Thursday that the incident's cause is being investigated.

He also stated that the airport had planned to replace several old travelators by 2025, but may now accelerate the process. According to local media, the travelator in question has been in operation since 1996.
